Derek Mallow was born here in Savannah, GA,  to the late William John Mallow and Ruby Bonds. Derek's father died when he was five years old by committing suicide. Derek was raised by his grandmother, who instilled in him the values of hard work, dedication, discipline, and commitment. She later made sure Derek joined a local Cub Scout Pack 210 that was meeting at the Historic Garvin Temple. Derek learned what it meant here to have someone mentor you through life. He later joined Boy Scout Troop 210, where he learned the importance of civics, and living to always help other people at all times.

 

Derek didn't have a father growing up, but he had a village that was helping him every step of the way. Derek attended the United House of Prayer for all People "The Savannah Mother House" when he was a child.  He is currently a member of First Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church located in historic downtown Savannah.

 

Derek is a graduate of Jenkins High School here in Savannah, GA. Derek is also a graduate of Asbury University in Wilmore, KY, where he majored in Leadership & Ministry. Derek is also a graduating senior from Savannah State University, where he will earn the degree Master of Public Administration.

 

Derek has been serving with the Boy Scouts of America for the last 13 years. He has created throughout the district and programs in many public housing communities, wherein 2007, we created a local Eagle Scout from the district. Derek has been an advocate of workforce development programs by creating Exploring programs throughout the City of Savannah.

 

Derek is a member of Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity, the 100 Black Men of Savannah, and a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.
